Portlandia Statue Introduction:
>>The bronze Portlandia statue is one of Portland’s most iconic public sculptures, created by artist Raymond Kaskey and installed above the west entrance of the Portland Building in the city center in 1985.
>>The statue is 25 feet (approximately 7.6 meters) tall, depicting a kneeling female figure with her right hand raised, holding a trident. It is inspired by the “Lady of Commerce” from the 1878 Portland city seal – symbolizing the city’s agriculture, industry, shipping, and natural resources. Her left hand is extended forward, she wears a flowing robe, and her hair is blown to one side. Her kneeling posture does not signify weakness, but rather expresses protection and attentiveness to the city.
>>The work was handcrafted using the traditional repoussé technique, making it the second large-scale modern bronze sculpture to use this method after the Statue of Liberty. Due to the complexity of the process, the project significantly exceeded its budget and was ultimately completed with citizen donations and transported to Portland by a fleet of ships along the Willamette River.
